After much pressure in the form of a petition that received thousands of signatures, Gordon Brown released yesterday a statement apologizing for the inhumane treatment of Alan Turing.

A reminder for all of you to sign the statement to keep libel laws out of science -in a campaign initiated by Sense About Science, and just as the signatories have surpassed 10,000. It is vastly important to keep scientific debates free, especially within the public health domain. Scientists and science journalists (damn, anyone for what [...]

So it seems that Simon Singh will fight on against the British Chiropractic Association by appealing! This is only good news and I hope that he will be successful in his efforts. A large number of (rational) people stand behind Simon at this point, and “Sense About Science“, kicks off a campaign to stop the ridiculousness that is the libel law in England, and especially when it steps on our freedom of speech. As I have said before, when a science writer is sued for criticizing a health organization, things are crazy indeed…

Dr Mike Egnor is a neurosurgeon, famous for his notoriously fallacious arguments and bad logic when trying to support the fairy tale that is intelligent design. He contributes to a ridiculous blog in which he often comments on news around evolution -a well of fallacies, misunderstandings of even basic evolutionary concepts, and just plain silliness. Actually, it is not even a blog: Egnor doesn’t allow comments on his posts, probably in fear of armies of people ridiculing him for his outrageously stupid way of “thinking”. Steven Novella has exposed Egnor a number of times already but he just doesn’t seem to notice… Everyone else though, has already acknowledged the vacuity in his argumentation… The term “Egnorance” was promptly and rightfully coined and is in wide use today.

The Spanish socialist government took yet another step towards rational and reality-based policies by proposing the legalization of early stage abortions.

It seems that Obama is really committed into advancing science and placing it in its rightful place: at the centre of every reality-based process. Before the elections he was promising strong support for re-igniting the sciences that the religious and ignorance-driven Bush administration so severely hurt. Thankfully, thus far, this is one of his promises that are becoming reality.

Obama yesterday lifted a ban on funding for international groups providing information and performing safe abortions in poor countries especially in Africa and Asia. In the absence of such groups desperate women that would not be able to support their newborns, are forced to undergo “black-market” abortions -with dire consequences… Well, the Vatican didn’t like Obama’s decision -which means it was the correct one!

Dubya has finally gone; Obama is now here. Can I just say that I completely agree with the Two Percent Company? Warning: explicit content!
