Alternative medicine debate at Guy’s hospital
A debate on complementary and alternative therapies will take place at Guy’s hospital on the 28th of April. The motion of the debate is ‘this house believes that complementary and alternative therapies do more harm than good‘, proposed by Simon Singh and Prof Michael Baum. Opposing the motion are Prof George Lewith, University of Southampton, and Prof David Peters from the University of Westminster, which only recently halted its Homeopathy degree.

The guest list almost guarantees a very lively debate and it would be fun (to say the least) to hear how Lewith and Peters try to defend the indefensible! Simon Singh’s presence also adds spice to the event, especially after all his adventures with the British Chiropractic Association (BCA)*.

Some information about the event: it starts at 18.00 at the Lecture Theatre 1, New Hunt’s House (the large glass building opposite the main entrance of Guy’s Hospital). You can view a map of the campus here. But please take notice: there are no tickets or reservations for this event so if you want to go you have to make sure to be there relatively early -and in any case before 18.00 as the doors to the building are locked at that time!

See you there!

Footnotes:
  1. * Simon criticised BCA in a Guardian “comment” column, for performing their “treatments” without sufficient clinical evidence. BCA responded by suing him for libel! They want damages and an injunction against him saying similar things in future! What the hell ever happened to free speech?! And thinking about this, Simon (or anyone else for what matters) is actually morally obliged to make this kind of comments considering the potential harm any unproven therapy might do! []

The way to a better body is to feed it a healthy diet.

Like Question Time with Dimbleby, no resolution was reached and both sides remain entrenched without true debate. I have to say I was shocked at the outbursts from the audience in question time. No questions just vitriol, … most unproductive.
Ah Jamie, but that was to be expected, no? When one has no arguments or evidence to back up his positions, he usually resorts to being loud and insulting.

There will never be a “resolution” in my opinion. It is like religion: no matter what science puts forth, CAM proponents will always imagine a “workaround” and keep deluding themselves and misleading others.

Have heard of several, more sure that the majority does not. The ideal is to research well before buying any drugs.
