Well, Sheri, at least you say homeopathy is magic. I wouldn't want to argue with that.

My problem is with claims that it is science. I also think that things which really work can be seen to work in a fair test. In fact some of the most effective medicines work so well that rigorous, formal scientific trials are not necessary - the answer is obvious. (Penicillin comes to mind)

Here in the UK it is actually taught in some universities as a science subject! Now, I would think that this should make you unhappy if you are being honest and consistent in your dismissal of science.

Now, I hope that you are not accusing me of "hate"? You know nothing about me. In the conext of this debate, all I'm interested in is honesty about what is best for peoples' health and fairness in assessing that.

My comments here have been to point out where a particular so-called 'scientific' homeopath has been, to be polite, less than honest.

I don't see how it's very loving for some homeopaths to pretend to be able to help sick people by offering them medicine with no medicine in it, and telling untruths about the evidence. I'd love to know what you think about that?

Now at least you are honest and call it magic rather than medicine. I can respect that. I support the right of individuals to choose to use magic. I just don't want it taught as science in schools or universities; or provided at the expense of the public purse. I really want people to speak truth to each other on this topic.

Give my best to the dolphins.

God you science types. God loves us and put magic here to prove he exists. How can you live with so much hate towards those of us who are filled with love and pray for you all. Can't you see the conspiracy of the medicine companies keeping you from seeing the light that our lives are in the hands of God not science. Homeopathy is an extension of the hand of god showing his love for us all. All the profits from my sales of homeopathic medicine are given to my ministry here in Maui to research into the health benefits of swimming with Dolphins. How can you all be so blinded by science?

Thank you for applying fact and logic to nonsense based conclusions. In general the proponents of this fraud are vain and undereducated, Vanity in this case is that they state that they "know" the truth when they read it, and never even attempt to isolate the facts, especially if they do not support their wishful thinking. The proponents are undereducated as in all cases to date no direct research is ever sited, only more nonsense from unsupported claims. If a single proponent was to complete and pass a course in statistics, complete and pass a course in physics (both at sophomore US college level at an accedited university) perhaps some sort of study with foundation of fact could be presented.

I guess until then we will be presented by homeopaths wished based gobbledy gook articles writen by profiteers who continue to sell junk medicine to wishful thinkers.

Maybe when these proponents get real education they no longer have the time to promote junk science, get real jobs and are never heard from again:?

Ladies and gentlemen there was a time when wishful thinking and worship of the gods ruled the earth, it was called the dark ages. A lot of people during that time lived short unproductive lives due to the ignorance and vanity of population. Why work when we can pray and wish? Work is harder.

Here's another example (see the part at the end about, "30. Homeopathy for postoperative ileus: a meta-analysis") of an apologist for homeopathy blind to the message of Barnes et al.

It makes me wonder if they take classes in how to misrepresent this stuff.

Hi apgaylard,

it is quite difficult to reach any other conclusion over Barnes unless you are blind: it is plainly opposite to what homeopaths believe.

And of course you are right that Dana is a 'he' and Jacobs is a 'she' :-) I only realized this about Dana after my second post when I saw a picture of him but I forgot to edit this first post! Thanks

Excellent stuff. I've been over much of the same ground myself. I'm reassured to see that you came to the same conclusion that I did over Barnes et al.

BTW. 'Dana' male and 'Jacobs' female!

Hi Helena,

I *did* provide not one but two links to Science-based Medicine but you probably missed them in the text (bold blue typeface)!

I got interested into prior probabilities and Bayesian statistics from another blog post which I cannot remember right now. I then started reading more in the Internet (I also have some books on Maths and Statistics).

However, it is true that Science-based Medicine helped me really consolidate this topic in the context of improbable/implausible medicine! That is one very well written blog indeed.

Did you do research into Bayesian statistical analysis yourself, or read it about it on the Science Based Medicine blog as I did? If the latter, then a link might be polite.
