James ride the nostalgia wave and reunite
They’re getting away with it all messed up, yes it is James, reunited at the Brixton Academy in London.

A thoroughly enjoyable and highly anticipated live, albeit amidst a nostalgia whirlwind. James have reunited after almost 6 years, which saw Tim Booth taking up a solo career. A series of 8 gigs in the UK signalled their return to action, soon to be followed by the recording of a new album. The penultimate gig in this brief UK tour, took place last night (27th April) at the Brixton Academy in London.

The gig started off with a mishap, as Tim Booth took a drive at Iggy Pop saying: “at some point I had the option… the option to become an Iggy Pop or move on…“, a bit unfortunate a comment against Iggy. Thankfully, he soon realized it and a couple of songs later he tried to patch it up a bit: “By the way, I did not take a dis at Iggy, obviously Iggy is a fucking hero, but his is not my choice of lifestyle“… Nevertheless, he did look a bit old and I was surprised to see him like that, a big change since only 3 years ago in Belgium. In any case, his voice is still awesome! and his dancing is still unique! Very entertaining frontman, always happy to be on stage. Booth was also happy to share with us a number of their forthcoming songs (that sounded typical James by the way), so new that he needed the lyrics sheet in order to sing!

One more thing that bugged me: the volume was so high that 12 hours after the concert I still hear a buzzing sound when in silence! I mean, come on, I survived (easily) heavyweights such as Nine Inch Nails, Covenant and Rammstein, getting deaf because of James would be a bit ironic now wouldn’t it?

Personally, I believe there is a risk of a potential disgrace as James try to continue their highly successful back catalogue on the crest of the nostalgia wave that has hit Britain the last few years. However, I would never miss the chance to hear 5 thousand fans singing “Laid” together to remind me of my earlier (and more innocent?) years…
