Bureaucratic adventures in modern (?) Greece
December 22nd, 2006
Total chaos when trying to renew my passport -which I haven’t yet…
The website of the passport agency in Greece, as well as the Greek embassy in London mentions that 3 days are required to get your passport after you have applied for it, so I though I could do it while back in Greece… I should have known better… There is an appointment system now which doesn’t favor us staying outside Greece of course. But I had called in a week ago and I was assured (!) that I will have priority and I will not need an appointment. Yeeeeesssss, because it would be that easy… Eventually I got into the passport office to fill in my application. But: I cannot renew my passport because there is a misspelling of my father’s name in my state ID! Weird thing is, this was not a problem when I got my two previous passports! Furthermore, when I asked how long it will take to get my passport, they said about 15 days (!) in contrast to the 3 day bound mentioned in the web sites. ![]() *processed image -original taken from Bruno Bozzeto’s Flash animation So now I have to renew my ID which requires an appointment and all are fully booked till the end of January! Story continues… although it seems I will be heading back to London a bit earlier in order to avoid the expiration of my passport… The bottom line is what I have always known of course, but verified once again: in Greece nothing written or said before counts apart from whatever you’re being told at the moment; no one accepts responsibility for anything; no one cooperates with anyone else; no one ever knows for sure what is going on; everything has to go through a million offices and members of staff before it eventually goes down to Athens for further processing; and no one really gives a damn if they’re causing you a problem or if you have been misinformed. Public services in Greece are totally, TOTALLY unreliable.

UPDATE: after a very large number of complaints from everywhere, the Greek government has decided to NOT invalidate existing passports at the end of the year… They have come to their senses. This means that I will now not have any problems leaving the country.

well, that was what they said on the radio just before the New Year's Day but it seems that they did not follow up on that after all. As it stands, and as far as I know, most Greek passports issued before the second half of 2006 are invalid…

ALL passports older than 01.01.2006 ARE INVALID. I had to learn this the hard way.
ALSO BE CAREFULL: in order to apply for a new pass, you definitely need a NEW ID CARD. I just came back to Germany from Greece, so this is a first hand experience. Will go there again in about a week to get my passport and hopefully NEVER AGAIN. Getting a German passport this summer instead and they can kiss me where the sun never shines! PS-There are rumours that a batch of the first "new" passports they issued are invalid, due to a technical defect in the microchip (or the machine they used to plant it into the passport).

Ha ha! I am sure for someone living in Germany, the Greek way of doing things seems (and are) mediocre!
The German passport will probably save you from trouble and make your life easier over there. Good luck with that. Personally I have not managed to get a new passport here in London yet, as I have been calling the passport department everyday for the last 2 months and no one ever responds!

By the way, where did you hear about the microchip rumour? Do you have any idea who is to blame? That should add another funny (and frustrating) twist to the whole story!

umm hi, whilst looking for info regarding my passport (cause I still have one of the old ones that has not expired but travelled all the way to morocco just to be told it was not valid) I stumbled accross the info you had on yr blog. In a couple of weeks I am going home for 10 days and I thought I might as well do the renewal there. I found out that the application office is in odos xiou 8 kaisariani and i plan to go there from the airport. But reading your blog I noticed you mentioned something about an appointment…. do you perhaps have any info regarding phone numbers and if they issue emergency passports etc? much obliged Kali

Hi Kalliopi. I am pretty sure no matter what your urgency they will not issue an emergency passport! Regarding the appointment, you can go there early in the morning without one and if there are not many people waiting they will eventually take you in. But then it may take some time for the passport to be issued… They told me 2 weeks when the website says 3 days!!!
